GUMPTION: Sydney vs Melbourne

After a small sojourn in my ex-hometown Sydney over the weekend, I am once again making the comparisons between Melbourne and Sydney. I did this fairly regularly upon moving to Melbourne 3 years ago, and became quite good at explaining just how the two cities differ. My parents and I used to joke that Sydney is the hot blonde, who is a bit of an airhead, and who doesn't have to try too hard to get people to like her because she's just so damn attractive and cool. Melbourne, on the other hand, is the plain, studious brunette, who cleans up well and who constantly puts effort into everything she does, because she is aware that she can't just rely on her looks to pull her through.
In this post I will attempt to do a breakdown of the Sydney vs. Melbourne conundrum by using concepts that are easy to understand-i.e. fashion and celebrities. Enjoy.

THE "IT" BAG
Melbourne: The Chloe Paddington
Simple, but luxe, not entirely on-trend but still undeniably attractive and desirable. It is functional and practical but prevented from being boring through the little details.

Sydney: the Alexander Wang Diego in leopard
Ultra-trendy, in-your-face but in the classiest way possible, not exactly classic, but with a wow-factor that is sure to start conversations. Won't be cool forever, but will be loved forever for the happy memories it inspires.

THE OLSEN TWIN
Melbourne: Ashley
Classic, understated, the less scandalous of the pair. Prefers tailored black and white pieces and statement shoes. A fan of natural hair and makeup which always looks polished and sophisticated.

Sydney: Mary-Kate
Vintage-crazy, eclectic, a risk-taker. Sometimes gets it right, sometimes gets it horribly wrong, but always able to pull it off. Has been known to rock a red lip and questionable hair extensions, as well as outfits worthy of the most derelict hobo.
